Sleep, or something like sleep, has been observed in organisms from all three domains of life. Scientists have made remarkable advances in understanding many mechanisms underlying these rhythmic processes. The evolutionary advantages they confer members of a species typically relates to energetic efficiency.
Yet, just “why” organisms should present cycles of activity and repose is not a scientific, but a philosophical question. Could “sleep” be an unavoidable consequence of the ancient hermetic law of cycles? If so, what are some of the metaphysical laws governing sleep? Do “we” sleep, or just our bodies do? And if not, what happens to “us” when our bodies sleep?
In our experience, sleep and dreaming have been used extensively as an active aspect of the therapeutic intervention for all kinds of presenting problems. -F. Souza-Campos [Lecture 2012]
